Photos – Mather AFB, Sacramento, CA – 1987-1989 (Set Thirteen – Marine World, Vallejo, CA – April, 1989)
-
-
Our family went to Marine World in Vallejo, California, northeast of San Francisco in April of 1989; which is now called Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
-
-
A dolphin jumps high into the air as part of a marine show for the crowd in the huge outdoor performance tank.
-
-
Four dolphins race backwards across the pool while putting on a show for the audience in the stands.
-
-
Two killer whales and their trainers begin their portion of the show for the audience, showing the crowd how intelligent these marine animals really are.
-
-
One killer whale has secured a spot on the left platform while the other prepares to do the same on the right one.
-
-
The two killer whales are now in clear view for the audience to see on their platforms, with their trainers encouraging them from nearby platforms.
-
-
Three dolphins jump out of the water at the same time while the crowd watches them perform.
-
-
David and I decided to take a walk, and found the upper level free to stroll while watching the show at the same time.
-
-
Sometimes little guys just need action and can’t sit through an entire show – even if it does involve dolphins and killer whales.
-
-
Next we watched the seal show in a nearby performance pool, and here the seal and trainers address the crowd.
-
-
This seal finds a comfortable place to sit on top of the pool wall while the trainers prepare for the next act in the show.
-
-
The crowd has to expect that they will get wet if they sit close to where all the action takes place.
-
-
Two seals have mounted their performance stands and follow the lead of their trainers, while another trainer in the boat has another trick in mind I’m sure.
-
-
Next we went to the aquarium where David enjoyed getting an up-close look at the fish and marine life.
-
-
Here a dolphin stops by for a visit, and the reflection makes it look like he’s simply out for a stroll on a sunny day.
-
-
Leaving the marine exhibits behind, we take a stroll ourselves to see the rest of the park – including the animals.
-
-
The park had a petting zoo and an exhibit where you could walk through where the larger animals were kept.
-
-
We came across these smaller rides, which turned out to be a big hit for David – who was now 26 months old.
-
-
Sitting in the cockpit of a starfighter flight simulator was the best part of the entire day for David.
-
-
The BS2 search and rescue flight simulator looks like it would have kept his attention all day long had we let David stay in there.
-
-
Next David took his turn practicing to be a train engineer, trying on this locomotive for size.
-
-
David rather enjoyed his work as a train engineer for the day and really felt pretty grown-up behind the controls.
-
-
Next it was off to see the animals and David opted for a ride on my shoulders, in order to be able to see “eye to eye” with the ostriches.
-
-
The giraffes seemed to be enjoying themselves in their areas, keeping a watchful eye on the tourists all the while.
-
-
A nearby lake makes a perfect backdrop for this giraffe in the beautiful California landscape northeast of San Francisco.
-
-
The petting zoo was a brand new experience for David, and here he’s not quite sure what to think about this goat’s long horns.
-
-
The sheep had no problems with David petting them, and the animals and textures were something brand new for him to experience.
-
-
These little lambs were more David’s size and not nearly as threatening to him, and he was happy to pet them.
-
-
This looks like a type of wild sheep which David eyes cautiously – not knowing if this one is actually approachable – but they were all very gentle.
-
-
Two rhinos bask in the sunshine in what looks like a case of mirror image, while enjoying a good roll in the dirt.
-
-
This elephant plays with a metal beer keg in the swimming pool – and the beer keg besides being strong enough for “elephant play” floats too – as a bonus.
-
-
We get a close-up look as the elephant pushes the beer keg around the deep end of the pool on a beautiful sunny California afternoon.
