Photos – RAF Mildenhall, UK – 1995-2001 (Set Fifty Seven – Christmas Market or ‘Weihnachtsmärkte’ in Hamburg, Germany (Part Two) December 1996)

-
This is my second post of photos I took at the Christmas Market in downtown Hamburg, Germany in December, 1996.
-
-
Christmas Markets are always a major attraction for people to visit and not only for the beautiful things you can purchase, the food and drinks are wonderful too!
-
-
Here the illuminated Christmas tree tries to mimic the dimly lit church steeple that rises to the heavens above it.
-
-
This post features the square lake or ‘Binnenalster’ in downtown Hamburg, here’s the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Binnenalster
-
-
Visit Google Maps’ satellite view to zoom in on Hamburg, and you’ll see a large square lake in the central downtown area – this view looks across the Binnenalster.
-
-
All great cities of the world feature water within their cities in one way or another – this view of the Christmas Market is from across the Binnenalster.
-
-
The wonderful thing about the Binnenalster besides the large lake was the wide promenade around it for a very enjoyable stroll and views of nearby areas!
-
-
Here I’ve returned to a side street along the Christmas Market, illuminated in lights and festive decorations.
-
-
Another aspect of great cities besides water features, is the creation of open space within downtown areas in the form of public squares or parks.
-
-
In Germany, the Christmas Market stalls can actually resemble regular buildings – with heat and electricity.
-
-
This picture looks like it was taken within an atrium or covered area, which is always a nice feature in a northern climate.
-
-
Here an atrium enclosure covers a Hamburg side-street, allowing shoppers to come in from the elements.
-
-
I’ve Googled the storefront in this picture of the Hamburger Hof and found a link to the ‘Hamburger Hof perfumery’: http://h-hof-parf.de/shop/content?seite=hh_unternehmen&m=1
-
-
I walked around the entire Hamburg central district taking in the atmosphere, and here’s another side-street away from the Christmas Market.
-
-
This looks to be a floating restaurant or bar along the promenade, which provides a wonderful view and atmosphere of the lake for patrons to enjoy.

Here’s a view of St. Michaelis’ church steeple in downtown Hamburg: http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/St._Michaelis _Church,_Hamburg

This is a statue of Martin Luther in Hamburg at St. Michaelis church: http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/St._Michaelis _Church,_Hamburg

This is a statue of St. Michael above the entrance into St. Michaelis church, the Wiki article has a nighttime photograph: http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ St._Michaelis_ Church,_Hamburg

Here’s another view of the St. Michael statue above the entrance of St. Michaelis church in Hamburg, Germany.
-
-
Northern Germany has an architectural style that reflects the influence of the countries along the North Sea, with the historic features of bricks and thatched roofs.
-
-
Another quaint, thatched roof cottage in Hamburg, Germany, that could easily have been found in Denmark or the Netherlands, too.

Pretty awesome stuff, so wonderful to be able to see and experience places I have not yet been. Perhaps someday; one can only hope. You are quite the photographer and we are the better for it. Thanks for sharing!

Tammy,
Thank you for your kind words!
I’ve been fortunate and blessed to have had many travels in my life and I’m just as fortunate to be able to share them with you and everyone else! One day I’ll have all of my photos and writings posted here online, which when combined tell my story of a boy from Michigan who dared to look for and find adventure in the world beyond the horizon!
Cheers,
Mark
