Four of us shared a rental condo in Cutler Ridge, FL, now called Cutler Bay; here I’m standing on the beach with the entire Atlantic Ocean behind me.
We lived just a few blocks from the ocean, but the “proper” beach was up the coast a few miles away in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
We didn’t go to the Miami area very often and would rather visit the Florida Keys on the weekends.
We went SCUBA diving at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park one weekend off the coast of Key Largo.
This photo was taken in the Miami area up the coast from Cutler Ridge.
Another photo from up the coast From Cutler Ridge, and as you can see, this was not a swimming area or a beach to visit.
A view of Fort Lauderdale’s beautiful beaches; I thought they were the best in the area.
I think this was also taken in the Fort Lauderdale area, just across from the beach, back in the 1982-1983 time frame.
Our four bedroom rental condo in Cutler Ridge, Florida; which was a very nice place to live at the time.
The condo was very comfortable and in an ideal location close to Homestead AFB, but far enough away as well.
We spent a lot of time washing cars and enjoying the Florida sunshine, I’m standing on the right.
That’s my red Honda Prelude and my roommate standing beside his car in our condo’s driveway.
We all did well in F-4D “RTU” and went on to operational assignments.
Here’s our street in Cutler Ridge; it was a nice quiet place to live at the time.
A pilot from our class who lived in the area stopped by for a visit on his bike.
Bicycling was popular with my roommates and I was running 5 miles a day at the time; my roommate and I had run the “Bay to Breakers” race in San Francisco during Nav School, and he was wearing the t-shirt we received.
I entered a “mini” triathlon event with some classmates, but another rider wiped me out in a bike crash; here I’m second from the left wearing the “Bay to Breakers” t-shirt.
This was the first triathlon event venue – swimming in the “Gator Pond” that is normally off limits to swimmers.
I’m waiting to start the triathlon’s swimming event in the water at dockside.
I finished the swimming event in good shape, but couldn’t finish the race because of the bike crash; my wheel was bent.
Here we all are in our condo at Christmas, 1982, with our “Charlie Brown Christmas Tree” in the living room.
I open a package revealing a shirt I received for Christmas.
My roommate opens his Christmas present; I purchased the oak furniture unfinished, and then stained and finished them myself.
These may have been chopsticks…and a book as Christmas presents; that’s my first piano in the background.
A Christmas card or a letter from home…becomes the center of attention.
Another shirt received as a Christmas present; we all enjoyed our time in Florida.
