This was an excellent painting in the 86th OSS of a Ramstein AB F-16 – with the fin flash colors of the 526th FS, “Black Knights” and the tail number of the 512th FS, “Dragons” – painted by “Chuck” – but I can’t make out his last name to give him proper credit.
This was my desk in the 86th OSS from 1993-1994, it seems I had only settled in to this assignment and the news of the F-16s leaving Ramstein AB for Aviano AB, Italy, was beginning to be discussed and the news was announced in early 1994; which meant I would need a new assignment.
My Major’s Board met in December of 1993, and I was selected for promotion to Major above the zone – which was very rare in those days and I was very fortunate to have been selected as an IWSO; under the desk calendar and plastic on my desk was the 79th FS – “75th Anniversary Litho.”
The F-16 painting belonged to the office, but the rest of the items on display were mine – squadron beer and coffee mugs, plaques, my F-111E litho and F-4 photos – along with my two 52nd TFW, “Top Gun Certificates” – and now in 2010 I’m donating all of my squadron mementos to the historian and collector,”Tags.”
I was given the option of PCS’ing with the F-16 squadrons to Aviano, Italy, but I also had the option to return to Spangdahlem AB and remain in the Eifel close to family; so I volunteered for a position in the 52nd OSS that was unfilled and I was able to PCS where our family desired to live – which in this case was the Eifel.
