It was now February 1995 in Hetzerath, Germany, and David was turning eight – so my wife and I decorated the house for his birthday party.
My wife always made David’s birthdays very special occasions, and she went out of her way to decorate and make everything as nice as possible for him.
My wife has always had a great talent for interior design and decorating, and I liked to photograph her work because it looked so nice once she was finished.
My wife also baked a number of homemade cakes and treats for David’s birthday, and staged them here on the eat-in kitchen table in preparation for the family arriving for coffee and cake.
David and his uncle work together on the living room floor putting together a new Lego toy truck with all the associated parts and pieces.
David’s aunt and uncle take in the festivities from the built-in bench in our living room while holding the balloons that always mark such occasions.
I cropped this barley twist table with the antique linen tablecloth and vase holding a pastel flower arrangement, because it fits my artistic sensibilities perfectly.
The natural wood table in a light finish goes wonderfully with the white lace and pastel flower arrangement, and the fact that these photos were cropped from larger photos softens the view nicely.
My wife staged David’s presents here in the kitchen, incorporating a Batman and Power Rangers theme.
David shows off a video that he received as a present, and at this point on his eighth birthday this was already his seventh house he had lived in while growing up.
David shows off a Disney Lion King board game that he also received for his birthday, and he already had the cassette tape recording of all the Lion King songs to play along with the game.
David’s grandmother enjoys the festivities on his birthday here in the dining room during coffee and cake.
David’s uncle relaxes during coffee and cake, which is a great opportunity for people to enjoy a pause in the day’s action for a little dessert and coffee.
Even the photographer has his picture taken now and then, and here I am relaxing during a very enjoyable coffee and cake that my wife lovingly prepared.
This may be one of the best photographs of David’s great-grandmother that I can recall – colorfully dressed and looking very cheerful in her favorite chair in the living room.
My wife’s sister and her daughter decorate balloons while my wife’s father looks on – in the background are David’s great-grandmother, his aunt and uncle and his grandmother.
My wife’s sister decorates David’s birthday balloons – turning them into colorful and unique creations – with a different design for each and every one.
David and his uncle pose for a moment while wearing their party hats at David’s birthday party, while David aims his party favor in my general direction while taking this picture.
Everyone gets into the action offering their support and encouragement as David prepares to blow out the eight lit candles on his birthday cake in the kitchen.
The colorful fresh flowers are a welcome addition to our dining room table – color coordinating nicely with the birthday hats.
David’s two great-grandmothers enjoy coffee and cake together on David’s birthday – my wife and I always picked them up to ensure they were included as often as possible when everyone got together at our house.
David sits between his aunt and uncle while having coffee (milk) and cake, and the fresh flowers seem to have been picked out as a gift with the colors of the birthday hats in mind.
David, his little cousin and his uncle prepare to play David’s new Disney Lion King board game, as David sorts out all of the bits and pieces and figures out how it is played.
I join in the action with David and his uncle playing David’s new Disney Lion King board game, while David motions to his mother while she takes our picture on David’s birthday.
