Our family’s vacation with Don and Margrit was action packed right from the start – the next day we drove to Cannon Beach, OR – this is the view from our hotel after checking in looking SW toward Haystack Rock.
I often like to take panoramic photos, showing the entire view I’m looking at, one frame at a time – this is the middle picture from our hotel room’s balcony looking due west out over the beach and the Pacific Ocean.
This is the northwestern view looking up the beach from our hotel’s balcony, which was perfectly situated right on the beach – a perfect vacation location and destination!
This photo shows dramatic Haystack Rock, a famous Cannon Beach landmark – not only is Cannon Beach beautiful, wide, sandy, pristine and flat – it also has drama and a natural, rugged beauty to add to it.
This is a view of our hotel from the beach, although I looked through a number of hotel listings on the internet in an attempt to identify it, I never saw the exact one online.
The first event on our beach vacation was a race between David and I, to see who would be the first one in the water – here I’ve taken the lead heading into the cold surf!
I begin a running dive into the surf as David chases after me – it was excellent to be in the Pacific again, it had been too long an absence!
I continue wading deeper into the surf after diving in, and at this point David stops following and returns to the beach – the water was too freezing cold!
After getting wet in the shallows David was proud of his bravery in the freezing waters of the Pacific – in our eagerness to see who could enter the water first, we never took account of how cold the water would be!
After swimming, we all spent the day flying kites in the stiff sea breezes of the Pacific – here I watch over David to help him master his kite – an excellent family activity on any beach.
David and I keep working the kite, slowly gaining altitude without letting the lines grow slack – these maneuverable kites were a little tricky until they were finally stabilized at altitude in a stiff breeze.
David finally gets the hang of maneuvering his kite and looks over toward his mom as she snaps this photo – a boy and his kite – a part of every childhood.
My wife takes a spin with the kite on here own in front of our hotel – you can see how perfectly situated it was right on the beach, with direct access to the sand and water.
David’s mom quickly masters her kite on the most beautiful day at Cannon Beach that you could ever hope to have on vacation – while Margrit and Don begin the process of launching their kite.
Don works with David in another round of aerial training to get the hang of maneuvering a kite with two guide lines – it was easy to send the kite out of control if it started swaying back and forth too wildly.
David solos again – this time in formation with the darker kite flying to his left – under Don’s patient kite flying tutelage.
Ready to assist at a moment’s notice, Don shadows David to make sure he keeps his kite from flying out of control in the stiff sea breeze.
Don and David prepare to launch their kite for another round of airmanship in front of Haystack Rock – we spent most of the day enjoying the sea, sand and kite flying! 🙂
