Original Song – “Copenhagen”

Copenhagen is a dreamy little song of whimsical thoughts and daydreams that carry us away to idyllic gardens in our minds.  The autobiographical component of this song is that I did spend the weekend in Copenhagen with a squadron buddy in about 1985 – flying commercial from Karup Air Base, Denmark, to Copenhagen – including taking the fast ferry to Malmö, Sweden and back on a sleepy Sunday morning before returning via commercial to Karup Air Base. The whimsical, dreamy and romantic portion of this song – and the artistic license of being a songwriter – is the daydream of a girl, represented by The Little Mermaid statue, coming to life in Copenhagen…but alas, the mermaid was only a statue in the end…but the daydream was very nice!  “Copenhagen, city of dreams, In seas so blue, Copenhagen, how I’d like to, Be with you…”

~~~~~~~~~~
I wrote “Copenhagen” in 1990 based on my 3-day visit to Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden, around 1985, and a daydream based on ‘The Little Mermaid’ statue on Copenhagen’s waterfront. This song was vocally challenging for me to sing on Set 6 in 1996, as it covers a very wide range. On the first take my voice broke in a couple of places, however on the second take I made it all the way through after having only missed a few notes in pitch. This song has always been a favorite of mine as the City of Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities I’ve ever visited ~ enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark
As with all of my early songs during which I worked with my friend Gordon Olvera, I’ve shared the copyright with him for trying to give voice to my songs.  Also, emailed versions of these songs lose their chord alignment and formatting, so refer to the original post and/or the scanned lyric sheet as your guide.
  1. Mark,
    Again I am terribly sorry that it has taken so long to comment on this song. This song brought me out of the melancholy state I was in for quite awhile.
    It brought back wonderful memories. When my husband & I were still just engaged to be married, we saw each other 2 times per year. He would come here then in 6mths I would go to England. There was one trip I made to see him where we went down to London & did the ‘tourist’ thing. We were awaiting our guide for “The Jack the Ripper Tour” when he picked me up by a fountain, spun around with me and I felt like a beautiful Faerie, just flying in the wind. We laughed and smiled and he told me how very much he loved me. I didn’t know then that he had plans to propose to me while we were in London.
    Anyway, I feel like I am that ‘girl’ and that my husband is the one wanting to be with me. When I moved to California a friend of mine took a picture of me by the Pacific Ocean and I sent a copy to my husband, there was a breeze that caused my hair to move just slightly and it was caught in the photo.
    When he got it he said it reminded him of when he swung me around & that he hoped that his delicate faerie was well and happy until we could be married.
    Thank you so much for a beautiful memory due to your song. I hear it now on WMDJ and it is permanently on the playlist.
    Love in Christ & God Bless you,
    Jade
