Original Song – “You Get What You Pray For”

You Get What You Pray For is a song that speaks to my experience of life, prayer and following my heart.  Many of my songs have a faith-based theme, and I’ve tried to reflect positive and uplifting lyrics within all my songs.  I’d always wanted to write songs ever since I was a teenager, but it wasn’t until almost 20 years later that I said a prayer asking God to allow me to write songs if it was within His will for me, and my prayer was answered in that very minute.  I went on to write over 200 songs in about a four year period while juggling everything else in my life, and learned the meaning of being careful what we pray for because it just might come true.  Surrounded by piles of lyrics, scribbles of written music and guitar chords, I found that I was overwhelmed by the responsibility of shepherding what I had prayed for.  Although I hadn’t prayed to be a performer, it seemed logical that I was to perform the songs I’d written, and despite investing my time and resources into trying, it wasn’t meant to be.  I questioned God’s purpose in giving me these songs if I was unable to do anything with them, yet now as I’m posting my songs online and describing their essence to you, God’s plan for my prayer was larger than I could have ever dreamed of on my own!  The key line in this song is the second verse of this line, “You know you get what you pray for, The Lord gives you what you need…”  Amen.

I recorded my original song “You Get What You Pray For” on Set 4 in 1996, and this song completes the set.  The song speaks to my personal experience with prayer, for it was a prayer that led to this and all of my songs, “You know you get what you pray for, The Lord gives you what you need…” Enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark

Original Song – “The World”

The World is a quiet, thoughtful and prayerful song for love, hope and peace to be given a chance to transform the world into the thoughtful, joyful, generous and caring place it should be for everyone.  For love, hope and peace form a foundation from which all things can thrive, grow and prosper.  Let us all hope and pray that love, hope and peace will one day fill the world, and usher in a brighter and more beautiful tomorrow for everyone, “The world cries out for love, Give love a chance…”

I recorded my original song “The World” as a demo on Set 15 in 1997, and it completes the set.  The intro is a bit rough, but the song speaks to the world crying out for love, hope and peace, “The world cries out for love, Give love a chance…” Enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark

Original Song – “Smile For Me”

Smile For Me is a little song about smiles and tears, laughter and sadness, happiness and joy.  It’s about choosing to be happy and seeing the sunshine in our lives, wiping the tears away and smiling a little smile today.  Happiness is a choice – always has been and always will be – but sometimes it’s hard to see the sunshine streaming into our lives when our eyes are full of tears.  It often takes someone to help us wipe our tears away and remind us that it’s a sunny day outside!  Only then can we, “Smile a little smile, Smile a little smile for me, Baby wipe your tears away, Baby smile a smile today, Look around it’s a sunny day today!”

~~~~~~~~~~
I recorded my original song “Smile For Me” as a demo on Set 14 in 1997, and it completes the set. The song speaks to the emotions of happiness and sadness, “Sometimes we laugh when we cry, Sometimes we cry when we laugh, Do you wonder why…” Enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark
Original Song – “Pretty Baby”
Pretty Baby is a song about the mistakes we make in life, and the resulting changes we make in ourselves as a consequence. We all make mistakes in life, it’s part of living and being human – for to not make mistakes would mean that we’re not participating in the world around us.  The essence of our humanity isn’t that we make mistakes, but that we have the ability to make changes in ourselves that limit the chances of making those same mistakes twice.  I didn’t write this song from an autobiographical perspective, although I could have – because I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my life.
Although I wrote this song as a single, straight through verse, I’ll present it below in individual verses so you can see how each part relates to the whole.  Pretty Baby is a fast paced, earnest, remorseful and bluesy song, that reflects the urgency of the singer to find his love and tell her that he’s very sorry for what he’s said and done.  The singer’s also eager to show her the changes he’s made in his life, to prevent him from being who he once was.  He wants a second chance to demonstrate that these changes are the real deal – and to ask her to come back to him because his love for her is true. “I’ve made some changes in my life for you, I never ever meant to ever hurt you, I know those things that I said were wrong, So I sat down to write you this song…”
~~~~~~~~~~

I recorded my original song “Pretty Baby” in two takes as demos on Set 12 in 1997, and it speaks of mistakes, apologies, changes and love, “I’ve made some changes in my life for you, I never ever meant to ever hurt you, I know those those things that I said were wrong, So I sat down to write you this song…” Enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark

Original Song – “Six String”

Six String is a song about living one’s dreams and riding that train as far as the tracks and the dream will take you.  In some respects, this song is autobiographical in nature.  I wrote this song as an anthem for my rock ‘n’ roll dreams of performing my songs one day, but that gift wasn’t given to me.  I taught myself to play the guitar and wrote Six String shortly after learning a handful of chords – G, C, D, E and A.  However, the line, “make you a star” is a liberal sprinkling of artistic license to gloss over the fact that I was just a songwriter and not a performer.  I tried to perform my songs, but it wasn’t my talent and didn’t work out.  Yet, my rock ‘n’ roll dreams never died – I’m finally posting the songs I wrote so many years ago – and perhaps one day someone else may sing, “Gonna’ rock my way from New York to LA, From the Motor City down Houston way, Gonna’ pack my dreams in an old Chevrolet, With this six string guitar I’m gonna’ play, Rock & Roll tonight, Rock & Roll all night!”

Original Song – “Do You Think About Me”

Do You Think About Me is a whimsical, daydream of a song that was originally written as a single verse and chorus – but I’ve added verses two, three and four this morning while creating this post.  This song is one of my earliest works and I’ve included the music notation to try to give you a feeling for the work that’s gone into these songs of mine.  My earliest songs were written on the piano and I tried to write out the musical notation, but it proved to be too difficult for me to get the timing right.  My later songs were written on the guitar and I simply focused on noting the individual chords.  Do You Think About Me reminds me of daydreaming while watching the clouds floating by and thinking about someone far, far away…and wondering if they’re thinking about me in the same way, too…  “Do you think about me, Do you think about me at all, Do you dream about me, Do you dream about me at all…”

~~~~~~~~~~
I originally wrote “Do You Think About Me” as a whimsical daydream of a little song, with just a single verse and chorus on the piano in 1990 ~ and have since written three additional verses after recording this track as part of Set 16 in the mid-90s. This song was very difficult for me to sing, as it spans quite a fluctuating range, and I sang it with only the quietest guitar strumming to try to help me find the right notes. For the most part it works! Enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark
Earlier I posted the first take of my original song called “Do You Think About Me” from Set 16 that I recorded back in 1997. I decided to post the a cappella version as well for you ~ enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark
Original Song – “Still Got The Blues”
Still Got The Blues is an earthy song about feelings and emotion, inklings and disconnect, relationships and uncertainty, and of chemistry and discontent.  The blues is a very powerful medium to convey the feelings and raw emotion of being down-on-your-luck – of broken relationships, personal loss and wandering down a lonely, dusty road to nowhere in particular.  Life often has to take a turn-for-the-worse and hit rock bottom before things start looking up again – because it’s physically impossible once you’ve hit rock bottom to be dragged down any further. This song isn’t autobiographical, but instead tells the story a singer whose relationship doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.  While his Baby professes her love for the singer, he doesn’t see it in her actions – which creates a disconnect between his desires for their relationship and his reality – creating a classic context for the blues – love gone wrong…  “My Baby says she loves me, But still I’ve got the blues, ‘Cause you know she’s never around…”
~~~~~~~~~~

I recorded “Still Got The Blues” in one take on Set 15 in 1997, and it tells the fictional story of a singer having the blues, because his baby’s never around ~ despite her assurances of loving him. The song starts off slowly and picks up some speed and changes keys between verses in order to tell the singer’s story of heartbreak ~ enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark

Original Song – “Crooked Highway”

Crooked Highway is a song about the journey of our lives – the wandering path we travel from birth to death and all points in between. Looking ahead from the inexperience of youth, the winding course before us leads into a fog of uncertainty: Where will it take us? How will it all turn out?  Will I live my dreams?  Will I be happy? Looking back from the wisdom of age, the course of our lives reminds us of the effort it took to get to this point in our lives, the wrong turns we’ve taken along the way, the disappointments we’ve had – as well as, the success and happiness we’ve achieved over the years. The truth is that none of us achieves anything on our own – for our success is the product of all those who have helped us along the way – and especially for me, it’s my faith in God that has given me the courage, confidence and ability to keep going into the future…  “The path goes on forever, Never an end in sight, You ask yourself a question, Will it all turn out alright…”

I recorded my original song “Crooked Highway” as a demo on Set 14 in 1997, and it speaks to the journey of our lives, “You walk down a crooked highway, Follow a crooked path, You carry a heavy load, A burden upon your back…” Enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark

Original Song – “Open Your Heart”

Open Your Heart is a soft, gentle and rhythmic song about the nature, essence and wonder of love.  There’s a permeable and diffusive nature about love that allows it to pass into every heart and soul in the world – requiring only an invitation to welcome it in.  A decision to love, while personal, has a far-reaching effect on not only your own life, but also on the world around you.  The nature of love is to be given away, and the essence of that gift multiplies exponentially through other hearts in like manner – flowing like a never-ending river.  Yet, in giving love away, it returns to the giver in greater portions than when first given.  The wonder of love is in its strength and power for something without form or substance, yet in our world nothing holds a greater strength, power or transformative ability – because love is supernatural and divine in nature. For love can pierce the darkest nights, soften the hardest hearts, bring together and mend what was torn apart, and heal what was broken and ailing.  In love, there are no litmus tests, barriers to entrance, degree requirements, examinations, side-by-side comparisons, levels of ability or any previous experience required at all. In fact, love is open to all who choose to love without exception – all that’s needed is a willing desire and the decision to say yes to love, “If you just open up your heart, It will lead, You to people, All around you, Who need the love you hold, If you share it, With each other, You will find it always grows…”

Original Song – “Fruit Of Your Heart”

Fruit Of Your Heart is a dreamy, enchanting and mesmerizing little song that has a heavenly, otherworldly and mystical sort of feel to it. It’s the kind of song you could listen to with your eyes closed in the corner of a garden all by yourself while peacefully meditating.  The song equates our hearts to fertile soil, into which God plants a seed of love.  This seed of love then needs to root and grow while we water, nourish and nurture it. As the seed of love roots and grows in the fertile soil of our hearts, it gains strength to grow tall and flourish – bearing fruit that becomes the visible fruit of our hearts to others. Sadly, modern society isn’t always a nurturing place for love to flourish and grow, which requires us to create within us the nurturing environment and conditions where love can prosper and flourish until its fruit have matured – which are then to be given away as gifts of love to others.  “If you take the time, To let your love grow, You will find, Your love will flow from within, Love will flow from within…

~~~~~~~~~~
I recorded my original song “Fruit Of Your Heart” as a demo on Set 15 in 1997, and it speaks to nurturing the seed of love God plants in our hearts, “Take the time to water your heart, And love will be the fruit of your heart, And grow from within your heart…” Enjoy! ♡ 🙂 Mark
